Sip and Savor: Perfect Pairings of Wine and Seafood

Jeff Smith, known as "The Frugal Gourmet," once said, "Most seafoods should be simply threatened with heat and then celebrated with joy." This quote captures the simplicity and delight of preparing seafood, emphasizing the quality of ingredients—a principle that aligns perfectly with the values of Chatham Harvesters Cooperative. We pride ourselves on providing the freshest, first-quality seafood, harvested with care and commitment. The celebration is sharing a seafood meal with a good bottle of wine, where the pairing of wine with seafood becomes a matter of personal taste.

The Perfect Pairings

  • Monkfish: a meatier fish ,tastes great with a rich, full-bodied white wines like Friuli, Burgundy, and Sauvignon Blanc .

  • Mackerel: Pinot Noir and Rosé, with their light earthiness and bright notes, especially complement baked or poached preparations.

  • Day Boat Sea Scallops: An oaky Chardonnay, often used in scallop dishes, pairs beautifully with their sweet flavor. Rosé, with its acidity and fruity notes, can cleanse a salty palate, while Albariño offers citrus zest and hints of peach and grapefruit.

  • Golden Tile Fish: White wines with a wide range of flavor, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gruner Veltliner.

Tuna Pairings

  • Raw or Near-Raw Tuna: Ideal with chilled sake or Chablis, especially when mirin is an ingredient.

  • Tuna Carpaccio: Pairs well with light wines like Pinot Grigio or Champagne.

  • Seared Tuna: Bolder wines like Syrah are great, but simply seasoned tuna pairs well with reds like Chinon or Pinot Noir.

Fried Fish

  • Fried Fish: Champagne is a decadent but delicious choice, while Cava and Sauvignon Blanc also work well.

  • Fried Calamari: Brut-style Chardonnays with citrusy flavors pair nicely with the sweet squid.

Calamari

  • Baked calamari in tomato-based sauce, a medium-bodied red like Chianti is perfect, with its plum and cherry flavors complementing the tomatoes.

There are many nuances to a wine and seafood lover's palate. At the end of the day, a fine wine can enhance a meal, but the meal itself depends on the quality of its ingredients,  the love that goes into its preparation and cooking and the people at the table. Our freshly frozen first-quality seafood pairs well with whatever you choose to serve, complementing your preferred drink and making every meal a celebration.
